Nowadays, from smartphones to smartwatches, smart TVs, smart LEDs, washing machines, refrigerators, ACs, Bluetooth speakers, fitness bands, laptops and CCTV cameras, many smart devices are used in our homes. But there are some of these devices that easily connect with other devices (such as smartphones).
And they can be controlled anytime and from anywhere (any corner of the world)? Such devices are called IoT (Internet of Things) devices. But the question is what is this IoT? What is IoT (Internet of Things)? And what is its use in our daily life? Come let’s know in detail?
IoT (Internet of Things)
Today, there are such smart devices in our homes, with the help of which we can control the whole house sitting at one place. Be it setting your favorite channel on TV, playing a song, ordering food, calling someone, sending a message, setting an alarm or turning on/off the room lights! Everything is done with a single click or a voice command. This is the real power of IoT .
In fact, today our homes have become smart homes rather than ordinary homes . That is, most of the appliances used in the house such as AC, Fridge, TV, Washing Machine, OTG, Microwave Oven, CCTV Camera, LED Bulb and everything have become smart. Even cars have become smart enough to save a driver’s life in case of an accident.
If a car accident happened and the driver became unconscious inside. So in such a situation, the car itself can call the ambulance and get help. And by sending the location to the police, it can tell about the place of occurrence. Along with this, by calling family and relatives, you can call for help. This is just one example of IoT. But the question is still the same that what is this IoT (Internet of Things)? So let’s know in detail.
What is IoT (Internet of Things)?
The full form of IoT is Internet of Things. That is, the Internet of physical things. It actually refers to Physical Objects (Things) equipped with Sensors, Softwares and other technologies, which are able to communicate and share data among themselves through the Internet. And connect with other devices to form a network.
Simply put, IoT is a network of smart devices that work through the Internet. In which physical objects communicate among themselves and share data with each other. Such as TV, AC, Fridge, CCTV Camera, Smart Watch, Fitness Band etc. All these devices share their data by connecting to your Smartphone. And follow your commands.
You will be surprised to know that today more than 7 billion devices are connected to IoT . And this is a huge figure. But predictions suggest that this figure will increase even more rapidly in the coming times. Because the use of IoT is increasing continuously.
When was IoT discovered?
Sensor expert Kevin Ashton first used this term (IoT) in 1999. He was the first scientist to use the term “Internet of Things” as a network connecting physical objects to the Internet .
Although the network was still in use. But the computers of that time were not so advanced. Because they did not have many sensors . That’s why they knew only as much as they were told. That is, they could not sense themselves. And this was the biggest limitation of 20th century computers.
Well, at the same time IoT (Internet of Things) was discovered and the world of computers changed completely. This was a great discovery in the tech world. Which gave computers the ability to sense . Later this technology started being used in other devices as well. And the result? Today we are surrounded by Smart Devices .
IoT Applications
Let’s see some real life examples of IoT (Internet of Things) . Which are an integral part of our everyday life. That is, without them our daily routine cannot be complete. So come, know what is the contribution of IoT in our everyday work.
1. Smart Lighting
Nowadays Smart Lighting System is used in Hotels, Restaurants, Bars, Offices etc. It is fully automatic. That is, the LED Bulbs in it are connected to WiFi. That is why they can be controlled from computer or smartphone. And the light can be arranged in different colors and designs according to different moods.
Apart from this, if you are a tech savvy, then you would know that LED Bulbs with Sensor have started coming in the market nowadays. Which saves a lot of electricity. Because they sense the presence of human beings. And according to that it automatically turns on or off. That is, when the person goes inside the room, they turn on. And off as soon as you leave the room. In this way, not a single minute of unnecessary electricity is wasted. You can also control such bulbs with your voice.
Not only this, nowadays smart lighting is also used in parties, weddings and big events . Which can be controlled and customized as per your wish. That is, the color, design, burning speed, direction and duration of LEDs can be controlled. And the power consumption can be monitored.
2. Smart Stairs & Doors
Due to lack of space in big cities and metros, smart stairs are used in homes. Which are designed according to the space and interior and work on different mechanisms . For example, some stairs are folded down to a small space. Whereas some end up inside the wall. Similarly, automatic stairs are used in large malls and buildings . Those who walk on their own as soon as the human feet are placed and stop when they are not used.
Similarly, nowadays Automatic Doors are being used in Malls, Showrooms and Offices! Those who see the person coming towards them open themselves. and automatically shut down as the person passes by. These are actually Smart Doors , which work with the help of Sensors. That is, there are sensors in them, which detect the person from 10-15 meters away. And when they come near, they open the door.
3. Flood Alert
If it is known before the flood comes that there is going to be a flood! So it is obvious that the loss of life and property can be reduced to a great extent. But in the olden days there was no such technology . That is why there was a lot of loss of life and property. But today our technology has become so advanced that we can predict disasters like floods, and earthquakes. And can alert people in time.
For this, sensors are deployed on the beaches , which keep a close watch on the movement of the sea. and detect the tides . Also check them whether they are normal or not. If the tides are unusually high and intense, and a flood-like situation is expected! So they immediately send a signal to the emergency services. And thus an Alert is issued in that area. So that people become alert and can defend themselves.
4. Health Checker
Today, so many devices related to health have come in the market that you can check your health without going to the doctor. And can monitor from Heart Rate to Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar Level, Stress and Sleep. For this, there are many types of smart devices available in the market. Such as Smart Watches and Fitness Bands .
I would like to tell you that nowadays many health tracking features come in Smart Watches. Such as Heart Rate Monitor, SPo2 , Blood Pressure, Stress Tracker, Sleep Tracker etc. Apart from this, they easily connect to your smartphone. And share your data. So that you can easily track your health and fitness.
5. Remote Control Appliances
All the Remote Control Appliances we have in our homes today are all due to the Internet of Things (IoT) . That is, most of the devices used in the home are IoT supported. Such as TV, Freeze, AC, Cooler, Fan, LED Bulb, CCTV Camera etc. In short, we can say that a large part of the home appliance is WiFi enabled . And because of this it has become much easier to control things. You can control all the appliances in your home from one place.
Why does the Internet of Things (IoT) matter?
When something is connected to the Internet! So it means it can send or receive information or can do both. This ability to send and receive information makes things smart . And makes you smarter and better. How? Let us understand through an example.
Suppose you have a Smartphone. With the help of which you can watch any movie in the world. But not because there is every movie store in your phone. Rather because your phone is connected to the Internet. And that’s why you can watch a movie directly from the cloud server on your smartphone. This is the real power of the Internet .
Now if a device gets this power, then how powerful and smart will it be? You can understand this yourself. By the way, let me tell you that in order to be smart , it is not necessary to have capabilities like Super Storage and Super Computer inside a device. Bus connectivity is great. That is, if a device is connected to a device with super storage or supercomputer capability! So it will become a smart device.
Today our life is full of such smart devices . We use such devices everyday, of which our smartphone is the most common. Our life has become a lot easier because of these IoT devices. At the same time, many things have come under our control. Like sitting in the office watching what is happening at home? Overall the Internet of Things means a lot to us.
How does IoT (Internet of Things) work?
By now you must have understood that what is Internet of Things (IoT)? But the question is, how does IoT work? How does IoT work? So it actually works with the help of Physical Devices, Data Analytics, Cloud Computing and Wireless Networking Technology. That is, Data works in harmony with Device, Analytics and Connectivity. And uses IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) for data transmission . Now you will ask what is this IPv6? So we have already told about it. You can read this article :-
Well, the working of the Internet of Things can be easily understood in the following points:-
- There is a group of physical devices, in which all the devices are interconnected through wired or wireless network .
- Devices collect data with the help of sensors.
- The collected data is stored in the cloud server or device.
- After that the data is processed with the help of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning .
- And finally the processed data is used by the device for some action.
Overall the working of IoT (Internet of Things) is based on these three things :-
- Sensors , which collect information and send it to connected devices.
- Computers , which receive information and act on it.
- Things , which do both.
1. Collecting and sending information
The first task of IoT is to collect and send data. And this work is done by the Sensors. There are many types of sensors. There are different types of sensors for thousands of information such as air, light, moisture, oxygen, air pressure, movement, temperature, speed, sound and so on . Even our phones have many types of sensors, which provide information to the phone. For complete information about these sensors, you can read this article :-
As you would know that every device has a unique address, which is called an IP address . This ensures the identity of that device. Also , devices like WiFi and Bluetooth , they also connect to each other through IP address. and exchange data.
Well, the sensors are connected to the network (Cellular, LPWAN , WiFi etc.) for data transmission! So that they can send the collected data. This allows us to collect information. And with the help of this data, we are able to make better decisions. For example, with the help of Flood Detection Sensor , we can find out about floods. And take necessary steps to protect yourself at the right time.
2. Receiving and Processing Information
After sending the data, it is the turn to receive the information and work on it. That is, to process the data and prepare the result. Computer is responsible for this. The computer receives the information sent by the sensor, acts on it and produces the result. Exactly the way a printer works.
The printer receives information through commands. Processes it! And finally gives the result by printing . Similarly, a smart door also receives information with the help of sensor, processes it and opens. That is, you can control IoT supported devices by giving commands to them remotely.
3. Doing Both
Many IoT devices (Things) do both. That is, with the help of Sensors, we also collect data. And by processing it, they also give Output (Result). Such as Google Smart Home, Amazon Eco , August Doorbell Cam, August Smart Lock etc. All these IoT devices collect data not only with the help of sensors. Rather, they process it and take action.
For example, if you give the command to Google Smart Home to turn on the light! So first of all it will collect your voice data. After that will process it and prepare the results. And finally take action. That means the light will turn on.
IoT Technologies
Although IoT (Internet of Things) has existed for a very long time! But due to lack of some technologies, it was not being used properly. But now all the technologies have been developed! And many new technologies have also arrived. That is why IoT (Internet of Things) is developing rapidly. But the question is, what are those technologies? Who made IoT possible? Come on, let’s know.
1. Sensors
Although the sensors were there even before, but were not as advanced and cost effective as they are today. Earlier, when the technology was not so much developed, then all these sensors were very expensive. Due to which developing IoT was quite challenging. But now it is not so. Because today very good quality sensors are available in the market at a very low price. Due to which the development of IoT has been encouraged.
2. Connectivity
Earlier, when Internet Protocol was not developed, it was very difficult to transfer data. This was the biggest obstacle in the development of IoT. But today these protocols exist! And with the help of them, it has become possible to transfer a large amount of data at a fast speed through the Internet. This technology has made it easy to connect sensors to the cloud and other “things” and transfer data between them. This has given a great impetus to the development of IoT.
3. Cloud Computing
IoT has developed rapidly due to cloud computing. Because Cloud Computing has made computer services and resources much cheaper and easier. That is, expensive Computer Resources (Servers, Storage, Computing Power etc.) have been made available online and on Demand at a very low cost. Due to this it has become very easy to store and manage large amount of data. This has helped a lot in the development of IoT. Because now the data can be accessed anytime and from anywhere.
4. Machine Learning And Analytics
Today , due to Machine Learning , it has become very easy to analyze Big Data and extract useful information. This has given a great impetus to the development of the Internet of Things. Because IoT devices produce massive amounts of data. Which is a very challenging task to process and convert into actionable information . But with the help of Machine Learning, this work is easily done.
5. Artificial Intelligence (AI)
AI (Artificial Intelligence) has a special contribution in the technologies that make IoT possible . Because all the smart devices and services you are using today are all due to this. Even ML (Machine Learning) is also a part of AI. Well, thanks to Artificial Intelligence, today devices like Alexa Echo and Google Smart Home have evolved! With the help of which you can control the whole house by just giving voice command .
Uses of IoT (Internet of Things)
Today IoT is being used in almost every field. And its use continues to grow. But the industries which are based on the Internet are getting the most benefit of IoT. That is, Online Businesses are getting the most benefit. Well, come on! Let us see some uses of IoT .
1. Retail
IoT applications are extensively used in the retail industry . IoT applications prove to be very useful especially for Inventory Management, Stock Tracking, User Behavior Tracking, Personalized Shopping and improving customer experience. Also saves time of traders.
For example, smart cabinets equipped with sensors can collect RFID based information. And can send on IoT Platform . Also, you can send an alert when the item is less. So that you can know that the goods are about to run out. This helps in monitoring the inventory automatically.
2. Healthcare
IoT is of great benefit to the healthcare sector. IoT applications are especially helpful for tracking patients and monitoring their health. Such as Heart Rate Monitor, Pulse Oximeter , Electrocardiogram, Thermometer, Sphygmomanometer etc. Sensors are installed in all these devices which monitor health. and provide data.
Apart from this, wheelchairs are often used to transport patients in Hostpitals. Those who need hospital staff (or nurses) to carry them. But nowadays , Wheelchairs with Sensor have arrived! Which walks on its own and reaches the needy (patient). This saves the time of both the patients and the hostel staff. Also these wheelchairs are very easy to track. Hospital Managemnet can track them whenever they want. and can monitor them.
3. Security
Nowadays IoT devices are used extensively to keep track of physical assets (houses, shops, factories etc.). But along with physical assets, IoT is also used to protect people. For example, people working in dangerous places such as oil and gas fields, mines, and power plants are always in a risky environment. In such a situation, they need to know about every dangerous event, which can affect them.
People working in such places are connected to IoT Sensor Based machines. So that they can be informed about every accident in time. And they can be saved. IoT Sensor–Based Applications are used for Wearables! which can monitor human health and environmental conditions. Such sensor-based applications play an important role in protecting people’s lives.
4. Transportation And Logistics
Different types of IoT sensor-based applications are also used for transportation and logistics systems. With the help of IoT sensor data , cars, trucks, ships and trains can be driven based on weather conditions, vehicle availability and driver availability. And they can also be stopped if the weather is bad. Apart from this, if you have ordered any goods online! So you can track him and find out where he has reached?
Not only this, cargo ships often import and export food, oil and other sensitive goods. Such items have to be handled with great care. If the weather turns bad in between or there is a storm, there is danger of cyclone! So IoT Sensor-Based Applications already give information. So that helps to keep the ship safe.
5. Public Sector
Like every sector, IoT Sensor-Based Applications are being widely used in the public sector too. And the public is getting a lot of benefits. Such as 24-hour surveillance with CCTV cameras at parks, bus stands and railway stations . Lighting arrangement on the roads. Traffic lights and traffic control. By keeping a special eye on crowded places, incidents like theft and robbery can be curbed.
Disadvantages of IoT (Internet of Things)
As you all know that every technology has some advantages and some disadvantages. Although the disadvantages are always less than the advantages, but they do happen. In the same way, IoT (Internet of Things) also has many advantages and some disadvantages too. Let us know about the disadvantages of IoT .
Security And Privacy
The biggest disadvantage of IoT is the violation of privacy. Actually, because of IoT, there is nothing like personal in our life. Everything has gone online. What do we do from waking up in the morning to going to sleep at night? Where (location) do you go? eat what? What do you drink? All the information is available on the internet. This is a big threat to our privacy. This data can be used in any way. Even from blackmailing to causing harm, anything can be done.
Similarly, the CCTV camera protecting our house has complete information about our house. That is, there is video footage of every corner. Along with this, there is also a complete record of all the members of the house and other people visiting the house (such as friends, relatives, neighbours). This is a big threat to our security. Because all this data is online, which can be hacked anytime .
To be honest, IoT is the biggest threat to our privacy and security. Because because of these Sensor Based IoT Devices , we are being tracked every moment. And our personal data is being uploaded online. Because of this, we can be a victim of Cyber Crime at any time. If this data is in the hands of a hacker, then he can make us dance as he wants.
Increased Unemployment
As the use of IoT devices continues to increase, so too does the number of unemployed. Companies have started using IoT devices more than employees . As a result a large number of people are becoming unemployed. Because their business is running smoothly even without more employees.
Nowadays you must have seen that every company uses AI Chatbots for customer service. These chatbots do most of the tasks from answering customer questions to navigating them with ease. Human Assistant is needed only in some cases . Similarly, now most of the work of offices and industries is done through chatbots. This has reduced the need for staff.
Dependency On Technology
Today, due to IoT, our homes are becoming smart homes. And our dependence on technology is increasing day by day. Today we can do anything, provided that we have a smart device with internet connectivity . Young people are wasting their time using this technology. They are chatting on social media in the age of learning new skills. And instead of books, they are studying from the Internet.
Lose Life Control
Excessive use of technology is taking the control out of our hands. And this control is slowly passing to the machines. Because we are working according to the plans of the machines. And gradually they are becoming slaves of technology. Now people are not controlling the machines, but the machines are controlling the people.
