He is an old man. He is a good man. He is a very good man. Ram is an editor. Ram is a good editor. Ram is an honest editor. Ram is a very honest editor. Rules of The in English Grammar 1…The का प्रयोग Singular Common Noun के पहले पूरी जाति का बोध कराने के लिए होता है। जैसे गाय एक जानवर है। The cow is an animal. गाय दूध देती है। The cow gives milk. घोड़ा उपयोगी होता है। The horse is useful. बिल्ली मांस खाती है। The cat eats meat. परंतु पूरी जाति का बोध कराने के लिए Plural Common Noun के साथ the का प्रयोग नहीं होता है। जैसे गायें दूध देती हैं। Cows give milk. घोड़े उपयोगी होते हैं। Horses are useful. सिंह बहादुर होते हैं। Lions are brave. बिल्लियाँ मांस खाती हैं। Cats eat meat. 2…The का प्रयोग सामान्य अर्थ में Proper Noun तथा Uncountable Noun (अगणनीय संज्ञा) के साथ नहीं होता है। जैसे राम एक लड़का है। Ram is a boy. दूध लाभदायक होता है। Milk is useful. शहद मीठा होता है। Honey is sweet. शराब हानिकारक होती है। Wine is harmful. 3…The का प्रयोग उस Noun के पहले होगा जो खास/निश्चित/पूर्वपरिचित हो और जिसे वक्ता और श्रोता पहले से जानते हों। इस स्थिति में Noun Singular हो या Plural, Countable हो या Uncountable, ‘the’ का प्रयोग होगा। जैसे (a) बच्चे नटखट हैं। ~ The children are naughty. (यहाँ children से पूरी जाति का बोध नहीं हो रहा है। हमारा तात्पर्य कुछ निश्चित बच्चों से है। अतः The का प्रयोग हुआ ।) (b) बच्चे नटखटं होते हैं। ~ Children are naughty. (यहाँ The children नहीं होगा, क्योंकि पूरी जाति का बोध कराना है ) (c) कुरसी टूटी है। ~ The chair is broken. (कोई निश्चित कुरसी–अतः the का प्रयोग) (d) कुरसियाँ टूटी हैं। ~ The chairs are broken. (निश्चित कुरसियाँ–अतः The का प्रयोग)। (e) कुरसियाँ उपयोगी होती हैं। ~ Chairs are useful. (यहाँ chairs से पूरी जाति का बोध हो रहा है। चूंकि यह Plural Number में है, अतः इसके पहले The का प्रयोग नहीं होगा ) (f) गायें बीमार हैं। ~ The cows are ill. (खास/निश्चित गायें—अतः The का प्रयोग) (g) गायें सीधी होती हैं। ~ Cows are gentle. (पूरी जाति का बोध कराने के लिए Plural Noun के साथ The का प्रयोग नहीं होगा ) (h) पानी गंदा है। ~ The water is dirty. (खास/निश्चित पानी–अतः The का प्रयोग) (i) पानी उपयोगी होता है। ~ Water is useful. (सामान्य अर्थ में The का प्रयोग नहीं होगा, चूँकि water uncountable Noun है ) (j) आदमी पागल था। ~ The man was mad. (खास/निश्चित व्यक्ति की चर्चा है ) (k) घोड़े अच्छे नहीं थे। ~ The horses were not good. (खास/निश्चित/पूर्वपरिचित घोड़े) 4…The का प्रयोग उस वस्तु के नाम के पहले होता है जो दुनिया में केवल एक है। जैसे the sun, the moon, the earth, the south, the east, etc. 5…Superlative Degree के पहले the लगता है। जैसे He is the best boy of my school. 6…Ordinal Numbers (क्रमसूचक संख्याएँ) जब अक्षरों में लिखे जाते हैं, तब उनके पहले the का प्रयोग होता है। जैसे पहला लड़का—the first boy दसवाँ लड़का—the tenth boy 7…समुद्र, महासागर, नदी, खाड़ी, पर्वतश्रेणी, द्वीपपुंज, मरुभूमि, जहाज, हवाईजहाज, वाद्य-यंत्र, महाकाव्य, समाचारपत्र, ऐतिहासिक स्थान, मकान इत्यादि के नामों के पहले the लगता है। जैसे The Pacific Ocean, The Ganges, The Himalayas, The West Indies, The Sahara, The Ramayana, The Times of India, The Tabla, The Harmonium, The Tajmahal, The Red Fort, etc. Use of A, An and The Solved Examples : चाँद सुंदर है। The moon is beautiful. पृथ्वी गोल है। The earth is round. मैं पहला लड़का था। I was the first boy. एवरेस्ट हिमालय की सबसे ऊँची चोटी है। Everest is the highest peak of the Himalayas. गंगा एक पवित्र नदी है। The Ganges is a holy river. हिन्दुस्तान एक लोकप्रिय दैनिक है। The Hindustan is a popular daily. रामायण हिंदुओं का धर्मग्रंथ है। The Ramayana is a sacred book of the Hindus. तबला बिहार में प्रसिद्ध है। The Tabla is famous in Bihar. ताजमहल बहुत सुंदर है। The Tajmahal is very beautiful. Note: किसी चोटी (peak) के नाम के पहले the नहीं लगता है। Use of A, An and The in Negative Sentences यह सेब नहीं है। This is not an apple. वह अच्छा कलाकार नहीं है। He is not a good artist. तुम एक तेज विद्यार्थी नहीं You are not an intelligent student. विद्यार्थी लोग उपस्थित नहीं हैं। The students are not present. कुत्ते खतरनाक नहीं हैं। The dogs are not dangerous. सिंह कमजोर नहीं होते हैं। Lions are not weak. दूध गरम नहीं है। The milk is not hot. दूध काला नहीं होता है। Milk is not black. लड़का बुरा नहीं था। The boy was not bad. वह ईमानदार लड़का नहीं था। He was not an honest boy. घी शुद्ध नहीं था। The ghee was not pure. लड़के बहादुर नहीं थे। The boys were not brave. पानी गंदा नहीं था। The water was not dirty. सेब सड़े नहीं थे। The apples were not rotten. अंडे अच्छे नहीं थे। The eggs were not good.
